Hand arm vibration syndrome

Hand arm vibrations syndrome, sometimes known as HAVS, is a condition caused by continous exposure to vibrating tools, such as power drills. Common symptoms are numbness in the fingers, tingling in the hands, aching in the wrists and forearm muscles. If this sounds familiar, then you could be entitled to compensation.

Most people who suffer from HAVS do so because of their work. Whilst some people can shake off the vibration, others, who have had more exposure to vibrating tools, suffer more permanent symptoms. If you suffer from it continuously, then there is little available treatment to cure the condition. It makes any taks difficult, in particular those involving small bjects and those which require a sensitivity in the hands.

HAVS tends to be found in miners, engineers and steelmongers. To suffer from HAVS, it is likely that you will have worked with the following tools:

  • Percussive tools e.g., riveting, caulking, fettling and swaging
  • Grinding, including pedestal and hand-held grinders
  • Pneumatic drills and hammers, including percussive and rotary hammers Chain saws, including garden machinery.

If this sounds like you then don't hesitate to contact one of our experienced lawyers on 0161 764 1845 to discuss the possibility of making a claim. It is important to note, however, that companies will not be held responsible for HAVS before 1975.
