Repetitive strain injury (RSI)
RSI is an injury caused by placing continuous strain on the same part of the body damaging nerves, tendons, muscles and other soft body tissues. It is also known as carpal tunnel syndrome, tendonitis and tenosynovitis. Technically, it is caused because, during repetitive actions, the body does not have enough time to intermittently repair itself. It is commonly contracted at work and, if this is the case, you could be entitled to compensation.
RSI, if it is allowed to become serious, can become extremely disabling and can cause an enormous amount of stress for the both the sufferer and family. Traditional symtoms appear after 6 months and are:
- Pain, stiffness, swelling, numbness or tingling in the hands, wrists, fingers, forearms, elbows, shoulders, back or neck.
- Discomfort when carrying out a particular task, which goes when you stop.
- Loss of strength and coordination in the hands.
It is important to note that RSI traditionally starts with a slight ache that gradually gets worse so, if this sounds familiar, go and get checked out by your doctor. Also, bear in mind that RSI can also be caused by not taking enough breaks whilst at work, especially if you work at a computer, poor posture and stress. It is commonly found in factory workers, musicians, dressmakers and cleaners.
